The city of Baishan is tucked away deep in the Changbai Mountains, one of the eight well-known mountain ranges and one of the five major landscape tourist areas in China. Its predecessor, Hunjiang City, was renamed Baishan City on April 1,1994 with the approval of the State Council. The city of Baishan shares a 457-kilometer-long border along the Yalu River with the D.P.R.K. It has an area of 17,000 square kilometers, of which 78 percent is covered with trees. It is the first full-size national forest tourist area in the country.

Baishan has rich and varied tourism resources and features a fast growth of the tourist industry. It offers a tourist route from the Changbai Mountains to the Yalu River, and the Songhua River and a transnational tour crossing the border between China and the D.P.R.K.
