Situated in the esatern part of the Horqin Grassland, northweartern Jilin Province, the city of Baicheng features a large stretch of grasland and favorable natural conditions with fertile soil, plenty of water, and luch grass, ideal for the development of agriculture and animal husbandry. In recent years, Baicheng has witnessed a rapid development of its industry. The convenient connunications facilities and the beautiful landscape of Baicheng make it a shining pearl inlaid on the grasland in northwestern Jilin Province.

Baicheng has a long history and attracitve scenery. The Xianghai Nature Reserve, known as a "home of the red-crwoned crane and other birds," has found its way into the list of the national nature serves. It becomes a place longed for by tourists at home and from abroad.

Zianghai is now a national forest and wild animal nature reserve, an A-class wetland in the world, and a reservation to which the United Nations attaches great importance. It is a paradise of birds. The nature reserve extends 100,000 hectares in area in Tongyu County, and 39 percent of its area is covered with marshland, water, reeds, or a second growth of the virgin forests.
